It it always feels so good to end each school chapter and have a lazy summer stretching out ahead!
What are everyone's plans? Anyone lucky enough to be going to the parade for the 250th birthday of our glorious Army? I wish! Is everyone planning on watching? Are we making food and having friends and family over? Hit me with recipes! I have time to cook.
Now, it is confession time, for me. I lost a big bet. But I am not mad. Let me tell you what happened:
I was in the workroom a couple weeks ago and a couple of my colleagues were talking about politics. They are both Austin liberals. If you know, you know! Anyway I decided to chime in because I hate to see people I have worked with for YEARS being victims of lib propaganda. Anyway, they both jumped on me with a "Google it if you don't believe us." They googled it and lo and behold. I was wrong about the point.
One of them- I lady who is known as our "School Mom.", said that she is worried that I only get information from my own bubble. She said she never sees me actually listen to President Trump, I just listed to the news telling me what he said . I said I didn't think so. I do just fine and besides I have so much to do to keep up with lesson plans and grading and then everything at home. She then said "lets have a contest. Let's see who can eat the most of Brad's jalapenos." (Brad is our principal). "Whoever loses has to spend a month only listening and interacting to the news sources and social media platforms of the winner's choosing."
Ladies, those little suckers are HOT! so that is how I found myself registered to "Bluesky" which is like Twitter (or X or whatever they call it. I never got on there either). I don't watch TV news, so she is making me read news from The Guardian.
Here is why I am not mad. The Guardian seems to have "news news" from all over the world. They are not from here (the US) and seem to just say what happened and not tell me what to think about it- which is good. I was going to have a hard time with some media people just beating me up with their agenda. The Guardian is free too. Anyway I know for dead sure, I wasn't getting all this from where I usually get my news. How many of us know what is going on in Malaysia or Chile for example.
I think Bluesky is interesting too. There are people posting beautiful picture of birds and stars. I never get tired of seeing God's creations. There are a lot of posts on current happenings and politics. I am definitely getting an eyeful of what the other side thinks.
I have done some painful self-reflection after dipping my toes in there, and I realize that our School Mom is right. I have been somewhat blinded by the way I consume news right now. I don't do enough to look deeper into things.
I need to honor myself better to do better. I am a mathematician. Most people think that numbers are just straightforward and don't try to trick you into believing things. But if you know a little more, you understand that all of the concepts we use in math have gone through "proofs" to show WHY they are true and WHY we can trust a formula or idea.
I am not saying I automatically trust those anonymous people's fact or opinions on Bluesky, but I owe it to myself to look at what they are saying and what I think is the truth.
I also just realized how much I am vibing with with what Helena posted a few weeks ago about learning. Thank you Helena for shining a light for me!
So I will dabble my toes in a little deeper over there, and I will report back. It is only a month!
If anyone wants to go on this journey with me, my name over on Bluesky is algebraamber. If you are there, I won't feel quite so alone.
Let's go! Last one in is a rotten egg! And cheers to the start of Summer!
